Floyd 1000 series trem, Seymour Duncan JB pickups, jumbo frets. It’s a pretty lightweight guitar, considering it’s more than likely a cheaper piece of mahogany, and sounds huge. The extended lower cutaway is comfortable. I find JB’s to be hit or miss with me, in this case the bridge JB is awesome. The 16” ebony fingerboard is very smooth, coupled with the thin flat satin finished neck, allows for a smooth fast feel. The Floyd 1000, per as usual, has very stiff fine tuners. I like the look of reversed headstocks, but when it comes time to change strings that, along with the lack of locking tuners, will make it frustrating to me. I find the middle pickup virtually useless, at least for me, I just keep it low and out of the way. I’m not a huge fan of 24 frets on Gibson scales, feels cramped, but I honestly don’t play up that high very often so it’s somewhat of a non issue. No gigbag.</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-summary field--type-text field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Summary</div> <div class="field-item"><p>Full disclosure… I’ve only had the guitar a week, but I have no reason to believe opinions about it will change. Guitars with similar features, coming from Indonesia, are going for as much as $400 more, hell Ibanez Premiums go for as much as nearly $1000 more, so there is some good features for a $900 guitar in 2022. The most impressive thing about this guitar is the fret work, super smooth edges, no dead spots. I’m not the biggest fan of the Floyd 1000 series tremolo, if for no other reason than the stiff fine tuners, that being said they are definitely a stable unit, a pro level unit, and otherwise work the way a proper Floyd Rose should. I’m sure the pots and switch are cheap, if you rely on the volume knob for cleans you’ll wanna replace it, as soon as it’s turned enough to get any sound it’s distorted, not full on distorted, but distorted enough to not pass for a clean tone. At the time I ordered, nickel frets were not an option, in fact a lot of available options are not available on the virtual builder, so your best bet is to use their virtual builder as a guide and physically call them to actually order it.</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-summary field--type-text field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Summary</div> <div class="field-item"><p>I’ve owned 2 Carvins, a PRS style CT4 and a Strat style Bolt, both, while solid guitars, were not as good as the PRS or Strat that I owned that they were copying… This Kiesel Vader is quite possibly the best playing guitar I have ever put my hands on. The satin neck, ebony board, and stainless fret all make for a very smooth feel across the neck. The Hipshot designed tremolo feels more like a Floyd Rose than it does a typical non locking tremolo unit, like Fender or Gotoh traditional tremolos, you can basically do all your Floyd acrobatics on this tremolo…. And it stays in tune. The Vader 6 is a very well balanced guitar, given the lack of headstock, and very light around the neck and shoulders. I have heard stories of the lock screws being sharp and breaking the strings, I haven’t experienced that. There are lots of complaints by people about how they can’t get this or that, but I challenge anyone to find a Gibson, Fender, Jackson, Ibanez, etc., on a music store wall or online retailer that has 1/3 the options. The Lithium pickups are a huge upgrade from the old Carvin pickups, both tonely and aesthetically, they are high output and balanced perfectly, with great sustain and harmonics. I have no use for split humbucker tones, so the 5 way blade switch is just overkill for me, have preferred a 3 toggle with a push pull volume. Probably not, but this isn’t your fathers Fender Strat. A purists nightmare, the Fender American Ultra series Strat features a 10”-14” compound radius fingerboard, as well as a satin finish on the neck and fingerboard. Both of these features are preferable to me. The Ultra Noiseless Vintage Tone pickups have that sweet crystal clear chimney tone, and articulation you want and expect from a Strat, and snarl like an angry pit bull when overdriven, and the S1 switch, which engages the neck pickup in the 1, 2, and 3 positions, fattening the tone, especially in the 1 position. Fender reverting back to the headstock truss access seems like superficial aesthetic driven move, as the pinwheel is just easier, but the look of the Ultra is noticeably more classic without it, and the added skunk stripe, but really how often do you need to adjust the truss rod. I’m of the belief that locking tuners should just be standard on all guitars $1000 and up, the fact that you have to spend $2100 to get them on a USA Strat is absurd at this point. The cutaway contour is very comfortable, in conjunction with the contoured heel, it’s not mind blowingly noticeable, but the difference is there. I’m a sucker for compound radius fingerboards, and even though I find the straight 9-1/2” radius, common to Fender, to be very comfortable, the 10”-14” board is perfect to me. This purchase was a total snob move on my part, the American Ultra line is $300 more than the American Professional series Strat, but really superficially different, I don’t believe the cutaway contour and locking tuners justify the price difference, but I took the bait… The finish came into play as well, I really like this mocha burst. If I had the money to do so, I’d buy another, in the Texas Tea finish, the model is also offered in Cobra Blue, and Ultraburst. Jimmy has always been my biggest musical influence (if I had to pick just one), as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. When I think about what I want to achieve as a musician, Jimmy Page is the first image that comes to my mind. To have <em>artistic vision</em>, write great songs, play them well on my guitar, record them myself, and <em>retain total creative control over every aspect of my art</em>. </p> <p>That is what Jimmy Page did. That’s what Jimmy Page still does. Whether he’s churning out yet another round of Zep remasters, curating coffee table books of his life, or working with the director on the first authorized Zep documentary (out in 2021), Page always tells you to <em>focus on the music</em> — on the art.<em> Let it stand for itself</em>. It’s easy to see why. Jimmy’s art remains epic and timeless. You cannot take that away from him. <em>And he knows it</em>. If anyone <em>deserves</em> to have a colossal ego about their artistic achievements, it’s Jimmy Page. And he does!</p> <p>But Page has never wanted anyone looking too closely at his personal life and off-stage behavior during the years when <em>absolute power</em> corrupted Led Zeppelin <em>absolutely</em>. To this day, Jimmy’s ego won’t let him own up to his past behavior.  Not in interviews, not in any book, and certainly not in the new Zeppelin documentary. It’s a shame. But <em>being a rock star means never having to grow up</em>.</p> <p>That’s where this unauthorized book comes in. <em>Jimmy Page: The Definitive Biography</em> pulls no punches. It certainly gives Page every credit for all the positive things he is, and has achieved, but it also shines an equal light on all the negatives Page still won't acknowledge.</p> <p>Other books on Page and Zeppelin, such as Mick Wall’s excellent, <a href="http://dinosaurrockguitar.com/node/864" target="_blank"><em>When Giants Walked the Earth</em></a> don’t shy away from the subjects that have always been taboo to Jimmy Page — particularly his fascination with Alistair Crowley and the debauchery of Led Zeppelin on the road. But Salewicz’s book dives<em> as deep</em> on Crowley, and <em>far </em><em>deeper</em> on the subject of Page’s womanizing and drug addictions than any of the other books I’ve read on the subject. </p> <p>In addition to the Crowley stuff, there are anecdotes and testimonials from people who thought Page’s personality and whole vibe were distinctly dark and demonic. Part of this was undoubtedly the mystique Page (and the band) actively cultivated during the Zeppelin days. Unlike the accessible, mild-mannered Jimmy Page of today, Page in the 1970s was certainly a dark, mysterious character to the masses in a pre-internet era. But it’s interesting to hear how <em>palpable</em> this dark vibe was to people <em>who actually knew Page personally at that time</em>. And as Page, Bonham, manager Peter Grant, and road manager Richard Cole got more and more into cocaine and heroin, the vibe surrounding the whole Zeppelin machine became very dark, menacing, and on several occasions, violent. Make no mistake — <em>even if you ignore Bonham's death,</em> <em>drugs destroyed Led Zeppelin.</em> </p> <p>The women Page was involved with are also documented elsewhere, but for the first time, we have interviews (some culled from other books) from Catherine James, Lori Maddox, Pamela Des Barres, Bebe Buell, all consolidated in one place, painting a not-so-pretty picture of what it was like to be a woman with Jimmy Page at the height of his powers. Like many of his peers, Page is lucky the Me-Too movement has seemingly given 70s rock stars a free pass, and that the women involved were fully consensual — even 14 year-old Lori Maddox. In a chance meeting with Maddox decades later, Page somewhat surprised his former girlfriend when he sighed, ‘Oh, Lori: we were so young then.’ To which she replied, ‘Well, <em>I was</em>!’ </p> <p>Similarly, it’s fairly common knowledge <em>now</em> that in addition to the mountains of coke the band was doing, Page became addicted to heroin around 1973. But for the first time, we hear <em>just</em> <em>how bad</em> Jimmy’s heroin addiction truly was, <em>how long it lasted </em>(well through The Firm), and how badly it dragged down Led Zeppelin on ALL levels.  We are also reminded that even after kicking heroin, Page was still getting busted for cocaine possession (twice) as late as in the early 90s.</p> <p>Salewicz’s book also covers in-depth, the power shift that occurred in the band. Zeppelin started as Jimmy's band. He received the biggest share of the money, and it  remained Jimmy's vision driving all band decisions. For years, Plant went along, and later looked the other way as Page's heroin addiction affected the band. But that all changed when Plant's son Karac died, and Page and Jones blew off the funeral. After that, Plant had no fucks left to give. He almost quit, and was forever after <em>willing to walk</em> if he didn’t get his way. So while Page still curates the Zeppelin legacy, to this day, Plant holds the keys to any musical endeavors, and has done, since <em>at least</em> John Bonham's death. Jimmy now waits, forever at the mercy of Robert Plant's whims. They say <em>Karma never forgets an address</em>. </p> <p>There are many other good books on Jimmy Page and Zeppelin. If you want to focus on just Jimmy’s music and gear — <em>as Jimmy would have you do</em>, you won’t find a better book than <a href="http://dinosaurrockguitar.com/node/1080" target="_blank"><em>Jimmy Page: The Anthology</em></a>. If you want the sanitized version of his life without all of the unpleasantness Jimmy doesn't want you to see, try J<em>immy Page by Jimmy Page</em>. Brad Tolinski’s <em>Light and Shade</em> is an excellent book as well. But if you want the whole, <em>unvarnished</em> story (and <em>far more</em> than <em>just the dirt</em>), compiled from new and prior sources, all<em> consolidated in one place</em>, Chris Salewicz’s book is truly is <em>the Definitive Biography</em>. There is clearly a book to be written one day about that final quarter-century of Ronnie’s life. Certainly there is enough material in the bulging archive for us to one day shape into a superlative book along those lines, but this is not that book. This is a book about what Ronnie saw as “the first half of my life,” in his own words, in his own inimitable style, and in keeping with the spirit of how he wanted to be remembered. Upbeat, never say die, absolutely undeniable.  </em></p> <p>Perhaps someday, Wendy will write the follow-up book.</p> <p>Until then, everything else about <em>this book</em> is great. Ronnie's story, in Ronnie's own words, with some additional commentary and clarification from Wendy along the way. It begins with Ronnie's upbringing, the point he turned to music, and his dogged pursuit of his dreams through the years of Ronnie and the Red Caps/Profits, the Elf years (cheating death multiple times), and then on to his more famous stops. Here we get the good, the bad, and the ugly of of Ronnie's dealings with Blackmore, Sabbath (the first time around) and the original Dio band. Obviously from Ronnie's side of the story, but in all cases, he tries to explain both sides of the conflicts -- as he saw them.  Most of this stuff is fairly well know already, but Ronnie provides some additional clarity here. </p> <p>The Cliff notes version: In the case of Rainbow, it was very much a case of Ritchie being the character he is, combined with his desire for commercial succuess. In the case of Sabbath, Ronnie suggests, Iommi's cocaine addiction made him a different person over time. The falling-out with Campbell was about promises Campbell says Dio made, that were not kept. Ronnie also claims that as it became clear to Viv he wasn't going to get what he wanted, he became a disinterested band memeber who was bringing he band energy down. </p> <p>Ronnie's side:</p> <p><em>Vivian later claimed that when we started out, I’d said to him that I would be bankrolling the band, but by the time we got to the third album, it would become more equal. After The Last in Line, I began hearing about it a little more often, but nothing is as simple as it sounds. We were all making good money, but the financial responsibility still lay with Wendy and me. I employed the road crew and all the other staff we needed. I paid for the recording studio and the stage production plus hotels, buses, trucks, crew, airfares, and everything else needed on a big tour. I made the decisions over what we should spend, because those decisions affected the artistic integrity of the band and how we did what we did. If I got that wrong, then there wasn’t going to be any money to share. I kept a lid on my feelings as far as Vivian was concerned, at least at first. If I imagined myself at twenty years of age on stage in front of 14,000 people, doing world tours, being awarded Gold and Platinum discs with my name on, I would have thought I was set for life, too. The reality was different, though. Viv would learn, just as I had.</em></p> <p>Wendy Dio:<em> Vivian was quoted in the press saying he made less money in Dio than the road crew, but he was making $1,700 a week whether he worked or he didn’t. He managed to buy a Ferrari.  It still makes me a little angry because Ronnie was fair to all of them. They wanted to be considered Ronnie’s equal and get the same money as Ronnie. I’m sorry, but I said no to that. Ronnie got all the shit for it, but I’m the bad guy.</em></p> <p>Wendy Dio on the actual split with Campbell: <em>This is another part of Ronnie’s story that has been misrepresented in the press over the years, which I will now clear up. What happened is this: during the break between the US and European tours, out of the blue, Vivian had a lawyer call me. He said that what Vivian wanted was more money and a piece of the band. I can’t remember how much more money he wanted as a salary, I think it might have been double the $1,700 he was getting, on top of which he wanted equity in the band, a cut of everything, not just the royalties he was due from the records, but everything else, too. This lawyer told me I had five days to make up my mind. If I refused, Vivian was not going to do the European tour. Ronnie and I being the way we were, we did not like anyone putting a gun to our heads. So, we decided, forget it. Ronnie was having problems with him anyway. When his lawyer called me again five days later I said, “We’ve already replaced him.” That is the whole story.</em></p> <p>Ronnie: <em>Vivian felt he’d been fired, but I certainly didn’t see it that way. He’d gotten his lawyer to present us with an ultimatum—either we complied, or he was leaving. We declined. He left.
