Of course, if it were Malcolm's rig, and some other excellent guitarist were to play AC/DC rhythms through it, they couldn't possibly sound as good or as right as the best rhythm guitarist in the world. I don't think anyone around here really feels that way. I do, but I can't play any AC/DC rhythm part correctly for a whole lotta 3mn... One thing I noticed about that clip....you would think someone as highly regarded as Scott Ian could have played "Beatin Around the Bush" a little better....I know he was just screwing around but still....
Highly regarded ? By who ? Is he the 2nd best rythm player in the world ? To his defence, I think I wouldn't be able to play ANYTHING if I was playing through Angus's rig

Scott Ian and Anthrax are/were pretty big, Patrice. One of the "top four" - the others being Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer.

Well, considering he didn't write the song, and the guitar got knocked out of tune a bit, and he was nervous (as anybody would be!), I think he played AC/DC pretty well.

Yeah I know, I even see them live in a festival. Someone who opened for Slayer said: "they only play with muscle"... Have you seen those tutorial videos from Metal bands in Guitar World DVD, like Lamb of God, etc...? I wouldn't be able to play any of those riffs, but I have no interest to learn. May be I should ?

To his defence, I think I wouldn't be able to play ANYTHING if I was playing through Angus's rig ...by alot of people....many think that Scott Ian along with Mustaine and Hetfield is in the upper echelon of thrash metal rhythm guitarists. Personally I don't think he touches Mustaine in that regard...but that's me.

I just picked up the March issue of Guitar World. Page 72, read the part called "Underrated": this is what Scott Ian says about Malcolm Young: "Is Malcolm Young the greatest rhythm guitarist in the world ? No contest". Take that, Dave B !

I read that as well, and as much as I like Malcolm, who really gives a damn what Scott Ian says. I love how on all this metal documentaries and interviews they always have to get Scott's two cents....like he is the be all end all authority on anything.

It's kind of like on VH1 how they interview all the "never-were" comedians for their "I Love the 80s" segments. Not to say Scott Ian is that insignificant. He's a great player. Just found the similarity funny.

That's why I posted it in the first place. I don't care much about his opinion; I had an Anthrax tape at on point and that's all I know about it.

Yes, the tone is in the amp.
Now...
Record Angus thru a Pignose. Then record Scott thru a Pignose. Tell me they are going to sound the same.
Never.
Sound is in the fingers. It comes down to the fingers. And as impressed as I am, Scott's version of "Riff Raff" is seriously lacking.
But we have been through this argument many times and you all know that I believe how a guitarist attacks the strings with his fingers affects his tone more. I don't aim to start a flame war but that's my opinion. I know because I still sound like myself on any amp.
Sound is tone+style. Your tone comes from your equipment. Your sound comes from your tone and the style in which you play.
Sound thus is just as dependent on your fingers as on the equipment. Tone is gear-related.
Ted Nugent plugged into EVH's equipment once and commented afterward that he still sounded like himself. That should be obvious. I can't strap on Dave Murray's guitar and sound like him. We have different styles. My tone may be the same but there is no way on earth I'm going to SOUND like him.

Sounds like Ian pleaded "No contest." That's not a "yes." When Malcolm Young shows me he can play the rhythm parts to something like Bad Boys, Billy, Bark at the Moon, Sails of Charon, Hot for Teacher, Somebody Get me a Doctor, Burn, anything Rush song ever, the Trooper, Clockwork Toy (I could go on) . . . Not the solos, mind you - JUST THE RHYTHM PARTS. Then we'll talk. 'kay, Sparky?

He can do all those easily because he's the best rhythm guitarist in the world.
Though I suppose he doesn't want to show off, ya know!

I imagine Scott got pulled backstage and was given a once in a lifetime chance to play thru his heroes rig. It's clear that he's nervous. I think he did a decent job. I don't expect everyone to play perfectly all the time. It was a fun clip and all I took away was that it was neat to see.

Couldn't have said it better myself. (And I normally talk excessively...... ) Public +1 for you, Sir.
